The summer is over, even though it feels like it just started. I had a list of things that I wanted to do over the summer, including going to the pool, the zoo, the children's museum, and other activities. Ryland had his own list of things to do that he wrote himself and taped to the wall. We did do most of those things, except go to the beach, which we never got around to doing. The summer seems endless when it begins because the kids are all home and laying around on the floor staring at the ceiling crying that they are bored while your retirement savings is invested in a mountain of Paw Patrol toys that are collecting dust in the corner of the house. Now that school is starting again, those days of endless whining and crying for snacks seem to have gone by in an instant.
We went to orientation on Friday to meet his teacher and see his classroom as well as receive many important tidbits of information, which I have since forgotten. His classroom was decorated with clouds and planets hanging from the ceiling and his new teacher was kind and bubbly. She is really into STEAM teaching, which would explain the clouds I guess. I prefer STEAM as opposed to STEM due to the fact that the arts are important to me and it brings more life and culture to learning than just boring old STEM. I am excited for Ryland this year as he begins the first grade, even if he is somewhat ambivalent.
Here is a picture of his first day of school. It's kind of hard to see, but on his sign it says that he wants to be a teacher when he grows up. I don't know whatever happened to wanting to become a pharmacist, but for some reason he all of the sudden changed his mind. That's ok though, I changed my mind on what I wanted to do too, only I had already graduated college. He seems happy in the picture on Monday, but by Wednesday morning, he was complaining about having to go to school and was ready for the weekend. He has fun in school, but he sure does hate going to school sometimes.
This will also be the first year for Weston, but he doesn't start preschool until after Labor Day. He is going to have the same teacher that Ryland had in preschool. The thing that his teacher doesn't know yet is that she is not getting the same kind of kid that Ryland was in preschool. We shall see how all of that turns out in the near future.
